Chaos is defined as an “utter state of confusion or disorder”, paired with a kiss; its the kind of film that only comes around once in a very long time. A Kiss of Chaos had its New York premiere at this year’s New York International Latino Film Festival. Written and directed by Ricardo Sean Thompson, its ninety six minutes of intensity, intricacy, and just all around greatness! This Latino thriller has the ability of keeping its viewer on their toes the entire time.

A Kiss of Chaos is replete with dark and complex characters as well as a character or two, who is simply in search of a better life and hopes of putting their scarred past behind them. The role of Phoenix played by Judy Marte, is such a character. After traumatizing events in her childhood, she is a struggling artist trying to establish a degree of normalcy in her life. All of that is ruined with the arrival of her ex-boyfriend Angel (Michael Rivera), and her troubled sister Isis (Gleendilys Inoa) who bring Phoenix nothing but chaos. Among those troubled characters are also Phoenix’s bestfriend Tiffany (Stephanie Ortiz) and her brother Tony (Manny Perez), as well as Freddie (Adam Rodriguez). In short its a cast of pure new Latino talent. Together these characters play a distinct yet intricately woven connection to each other in the film. Angel has stolen five kilos of cocaine from the man Freddie works for. Tiffany devises a plan to help Phoenix get rid of Angel, while making a grab for the drugs, Tiffany’s brother Tony works for Freddie and has been enlisted in finding the cocaine, and Isis is just wrecking havoc wherever she can! In the blink of an eye, Phoenix is cast into all of this chaos and throughout the film one wonders how will she ever manage to escape all of it?

This film is about much more than an urban drug tale, its a beautiful tale of disaster. It brings together many different elements, and if one pays close attention to it, one can realize just what a gem this film really is. Each character in itself is a whirlwind of disaster, and the film is filled with betrayals, hurt and pure madness. At certain points in the film, I was watching and thinking to myself “what else could possibly go wrong?” or “how more crazy can these characters be?” The acting in the film is superb and the actors fully delve into their respective roles. Personally my favorite characters were Tony and Isis, watching them on screen wrecking havoc was an intense emotion. At times one could feel the tension in the audience as we wondered what would happen next. What ends up happening in the film is what makes A Kiss of Chaos such an excellent film. A Kiss of Chaos is a unique film, with an ever more unique set of characters. Overall, I think that A Kiss of Chaos is nothing less than stellar, a must see film!

Commenting on the film, Junot Diaz, Pulitzer prize winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao said La Soga is ” a searing portrayal of a killer’s quest for redemption. La Soga is many things: a crime story, a love story, and a no-holds-barred examination of the costs of vengeance. It is also flat-out brilliant”.

Filmed between the Dominican Republic and Washington Heights, NYC; La Soga may just be one of the most phenomenal Dominican movies ever made! The film is an action packed drama of the “journey of a brave man who risks everything to find justice”. It is a tale of a innocence, bravery, and redemption. The cast is composed of pure Dominican talent with actors Manny Perez, Juan Fernandez, and Celines Toribio. The films also includes other Latino talent such as the film debut of ex-Miss Universe, Denise Quinoñes. The film is due out sometime in 2009, and personally I can’t wait for it to be released. If the film is anything like its promising trailer portrays it to be then La Soga is going to be nothing short of outstanding and mind-blowing that will send a chill up your spine!
